The Geosynchronous Large Debris Reorbiter (GLiDeR™) is a novel and elegant approach. GLiDeR addresses all of the above concerns through the use of an electrostatic “tractor” system and electric propulsion. Advantages include: 1) no physical contact between tug and debris; 2) no need to match motion of the target; 3) electrostatic force is inherently gentle, pulling the entire debris object; and 4) extreme fuel efficiency allows the space-tug to remove debris and defunct spacecraft for several years. Depending on debris mass, GLiDeR could relocate a GEO object to disposal orbit in approximately twelve weeks. A single GLiDeR should remove three geosynchronous, 1-3 ton, debris objects per year, fifteen or more through its operational life.
